Question: ...looking for information on how a hysterectomy would affect migraines...

Answer:

Dear Heather:
Many women have taken the path of hysterectomy in order to try and reduce their headache patterns. I see a number of women who tried this and still have the same, or worsened, headaches. If anything, hysterectomy and ovariectomy deprive you of making estrogen and, in turn, progesterone and testosterone. Many women's headache improve if you add hormonal supplementation to their native state. Perimenstrual migraines are often experienced just after the fall in estrogen levels at the onset of menses. In short, there is no way to "look ahead" in the general sense. What I suggest is that you sit down with a headache specialist, preferably one comfortable with hormonally-related headaches, as discuss your particular pattern and needs. Good Luck,
