Dear Dr. Krusz,
One of our forum members who takes an SSRI antidepressant recently took a prescription for a triptan to her pharmacy. Her pharmacist refused to fill the prescription, "for fear of serotonin syndrome." She returned to her doctor, and reported back to us that, "she (the doctor) cross referenced any of the triptans with Lexapro (the SSRI just switched to). It turns out they are all counter indicated with SSRI's within 24 hours..."
It's been my impression that serotonin syndrome is very rare, and that the combination of SSRIs and triptans is not a problem. Could you please clarify this for us?
Thanks,
Teri Robert
