  • 1)  Dear Doctor, My son who is now 29 has suffered with migraines since he was 9 years old. Recently he went to a chiropractor for an unrelated issue, but was told that his neck x-ray looked as if he had a whiplash. He has never been in an accident. Can a child get whiplash or be born with whiplash and no one know it or notice it? Also, could this possible be the cause of his migraines? He vomits with his migraines and becomes bedridden. His doctor gives him a shot when one comes on. He is on Topamax also. His dad suffered from the same type of migraines, but he is deceased now and we do not know if he had the same whiplash problem. Any insight you can give us on this problem will be greatly appreciated. Shelley.

  • 3) I am a 59-year-old man. I have had migraines for about 40 years. After stopping completely triptans and coffee, I am now on Inderal, and things look better. Yet I still get severe headaches after ejaculation, and quite systematically so (not necessarily the same day, but surely the next one). I have tried Brufen 600 and more Inderal before and after making love, but with no result. What can I do? Many thanks indeed, Mario.

  • 4) I was wondering if other migraine suffers experienced severe depression after having a migraine headache. I have had migraines at least once a month since my teens and now I am in my 40's. Knowing full well that the next day after one of the migraines would be a day of trying to rest and recoup. However the headache I suffered a week ago Saturday has left me in a sever case of depression. I have not left my home in over a week and only getting fully dressed on 2 occasions. I have no desire to do my normal activates or even get off the couch. My question is, can migraines trigger extended severe depression? Thanks, Denise.

  • 5) I have intractable migraines that last for 3 or more weeks, with pain cycling between a 3 and an 8 most days but never completely going away no matter what I do. Sometimes Excedrin works, sometimes Maxalt works, sometimes Vicodin works, rarely does Midrin work although it will knock me out long enough to sleep. However, I just wake back up with the same migraine. I have also been taking 400mg daily of magnesium and 400mg daily of B-2 in an attempt to reduce the frequency and severity of the migraines. I do not get an aura, nor do I get nausea or vomiting, which makes it hard to predict that a migraine is coming, so triptans and DHE have not typically worked. It's just this chronic knife-edge pain slashing in above my eye. (There used to be a point above my right eye-brow that I could push and trigger a migraine, but this weekend it moved to the left side of my face.) Is there a dietary answer to migraine? I try to avoid known triggers, but am wondering if there is research that has targeted controlling migraine by diet. An elimination diet two years ago did not identify triggers other than MSG, nitrates/ites and chocolate. Thanks, Valerie in Seattle.
