  • 8) I am a 50-year-old female and have had headaches almost all of my life. I never have auras with them and have been told they are vascular in nature. It seems like sometimes I get the headache and although the pain will dull for awhile, it never goes completely away. I have had ct-scans two years ago and all was well. It seems I never had headaches during four normal pregnancies or when I was nursing. Three years ago my neurologist put me on 1200 mg. Neurontin daily. She also prescribed Maxalt and Imitrex when needed. I was taking lots of Tylenol at the time and she thought I might be suffering from rebound headaches. It seems I do fine for about 9 months and then I'll get two months of daily headaches. I am back in the throes of the headaches. I switched to Motrin, 6 or so a day (which I've now stopped at my neurologists' request) and now she wants to switch me from Neurontin to 100 mg. Zonegran daily, I am nervous about taking this medication because I've read through the side effects and I really don't feel convinced that the anti-seizure medicines work or are necessary for my particular headache situation. My menstrual cycle is erratic so I am probably peri-menopausal. Do you have any recommendation for treatment? I'm also taking feverfew. Thank you for any help you can offer. Sue.

  • 9) Are there any major differences between Topamax and Neurontin? Does one work better than the other and does one have fewer side effects? Kathy.

  • 10) My 15 year old son suffered from frequent headaches this year He suffered with migraines when he was five for several years. The headaches now are at times migraines and other times were at the back of his head. He also has sharp pain around his abdomen. We were told that this is not related to migraines. The neurologist prescribed Elavil. I am reluctant to give him daily medication especially one that also treats attention deficit disorder and depression. I worry about the side affects. What is your opinion on the drug and the side affects. Thank you, Debbie.

  • 11) I am 39-years-old, at age 11 I had an open head injury that caused me to lose some of my cerebral fluid. I started having headaches shortly after that time each year they got worse. I was diagnosed as a migraineur and then went on to being diagnosed with chronic cluster headaches with bouts of hemiparesis. I have been on all classes of medications some I respond to for short periods of times others not at all. Now I am being tested for MERRF disease or mitochondrial myopathathies and I was wondering is there any connection between the injury and recurring headaches or are these diseases separate themselves. Also what type of prognosis is there for MERRF disease? I would appreciate a response at your earliest convenience. Thanking you in advance for your time. Sheryl.
