Purdue Pharma
Launches the Purdue Pharma Fund to Focus Contributions on Pain Management
Initial $3
Million Grant to Massachusetts General Hospital Will Make Possible
Expanded,
State-of-the-Art Pain Education, Treatment, and Research Center
Stamford, CT February 5, 2002 Purdue Pharma L.P. has
restructured its charitable contributions program to create a new vehicle
dedicated to the field of pain management. The Purdue Pharma Fund will
focus the companys contributions on nonprofit organizations dealing with
education, treatment, and research involving patients with pain. Kicking
off this new Fund is a $3 million pledge to Massachusetts General Hospital
to create the MGH Purdue Pharma Pain Center, a state-of-the-art facility
dedicated to treating people suffering from chronic pain and educating
healthcare professionals about the tools and techniques available for such
treatment.
This year marks Purdue Pharmas 50th anniversary, and this major
commitment to Mass General is one of the ways we have chosen to celebrate
that milestone, said Michael Friedman, Executive Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer. We are delighted to be partnering with such a highly
recognized institution on a range of educational efforts that will improve
the understanding and management of pain for generations to come.
In addition to those organizations focusing on pain, the Purdue Pharma
Fund will benefit a wide array of organizations in the medical education
arena and enhance the quality of life in the various communities where
Purdue operates. Last year, the company invested more than $4 million in
educational and civic organizations including the American Pain
Foundation, American Alliance of Cancer Pain Initiatives, Tufts University
School of Medicine, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, National
Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, and CURE
(Connecticut United for Research Excellence).
