New Migraine Medication on the Horizon?

Sunday December 7, 2008
It seems that more and more medications are hitting the market all the time, but every once in a while one of them really makes a difference. In a study appearing in the UK medical journal, The Lancet, a new medication called talcagepant was compared to sumatriptan (Imitrex) for migraine treatment. In a nutshell, the study shows that talcagepant was similar in its efficacy but with fewer side effects, making it a good choice as a migraine treatment.

Talcagepant is a calictonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) which seem to treat migraines without constricting the blood vessels. The triptans, like sumatriptan, affect serotonin channels and cause the blood vessels to constrict. This makes them poor choices for patients with migraines as well as cardiovascular disease. Talcagepant could very well be a good choice in heart disease patients suffering from migraines.

Talcagepant isn't FDA approved yet, but it is currently being studied in clinical trials. Be on the lookout for this new treatment and talk with your health care provider to determine if it could be a treatment for you.

Be sure to review typical migraine treatment options.

Don't forget about the FDA watch list of potentially dangerous medications.

DO. Foley,

Have your read or heard if this med will be an oral tablet/capsule and by injection?

I do take Imitrex. Have been since it first became available in tablet form. Do you know if this new med will be available in the injection formula?

I have had great success with the inject able form of Imitrex. When it comes from the background that I have with this head pain no way do I want to take a chance of experiencing the convulsive type migraines that I always went through.

Will get back later.

Thanks for the info and your insight(s). It really is so helpful and important to the one with all the pain.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I’m currently under the care of a major headache clinic and have been a migraine sufferer for over 18 years. My doctor indicated to me at my last appointment that a new drug was on the horizon that could benefit me. I’m on a host of preventive meds and currently using IM D.H.E. 45 with IM Tigan as my rescue treatment. I’m sure you can see the downside of rescue drugs but we’ve tried every other treatment and this is the only (and last) option that works. Is the talcagepant one of the drugs that could replace DHE. Thank you, Sheila

Good news, any idea HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST ?

(Remmember, Triptan was about $100 a shot – and many migrene sufferers have been incapacitated for work !)

Does anyone have the current status of telecagepant? Is it expected to hit the market soon? The tryptans don’t work for me so I am anxiously awaiting this new drug but no one seems to know when it might be released. Thanks
